The need for connection and to feel understood are two core elements that make us human. We desire to create relationships with others that provide us the safety we need to grow and experience the life we want for ourselves. Just as human beings crave these idyllic outcomes, we also experience tough situations that can lead us to feel hurt, empty and alone. It is normal to struggle with managing these big emotions, and we are not always given the tools to navigate these tough experiences in healthy and productive ways.

Whether you are coming to therapy due to a difficult life transition, relationship conflicts, or overwhelming feelings of sadness or hopelessness, your decision to seek help is a commendable first step toward healing.

I use a multimodal approach that is strength-based and person-centered to help you connect with yourself in a safe space and improve functioning in your life and relationships. I strongly believe that in order to create change, we must develop new skills to challenge old habits. We as human beings are capable of having fulfilled lives when we have the knowledge and support to do so. My ideal clients would be those who come in with an open mind and a willingness to create change.

Some of the therapeutic modalities that influence my style are Trauma Informed CBT, Internal Family Systems, Motivational Interviewing and Expressive Therapy techniques. I received my Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California. During that time, I also spent 5 years volunteering as a resource parent in Arizona, helping children and families navigate the foster care system. I am currently a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Work Associate in the state of Washington dedicated to growing my knowledge and skill and I am particularly interested in the use of expressive arts in the therapeutic process.

In my free time, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and our pets and exploring the outdoors in the Pacific Northwest. I also love gardening, baking, and reading a good book in my hammock!

Q&A with Rebecca

1.) Some therapists are more comfortable addressing the immediate problem, while others want to focus on the deeper issue. Which are you?

I wholeheartedly believe in meeting the client where they are in their journey. While I am very comfortable focusing on the deeper issues, I realize that some clients do not feel ready to approach those deeper issues immediately. Focusing on presenting issues might be the approach a client is the most comfortable with and I am here to provide a safe space and to find the most beneficial route to helping clients create the change they want in their lives.

2.) Do you tend to lead the session, or follow my lead?

I really think it depends on the session’s focus. I do enjoy providing at least one bit of education during each session, but I think that it is more important for the client to be in charge of the topics they want to discuss.  I feel my role is to help clients navigate difficult feelings, to challenge unhelpful thinking, and reflect on the content shared in the session.

3.) What are your strengths as a therapist?

I am compassionate, respectful, and value the relationships I create with my clients. I am always looking for ways to improve and expand my knowledge on a variety of topics and I enjoy a challenge. If I am lacking knowledge about a topic that is brought up during a session, I will do my best to educate myself and to ask as many questions as I can in order to better understand that topic. I am happy to sit with you in your discomfort and recognize the privilege of being able to help you find your strength as you move through it.

4.) If you had one superpower, what would it be and why?

If I had one superpower, it would be to understand and communicate any language. Think of how often things are miscommunicated because we don’t understand one another!  It would be really neat to visit any other country and to navigate easily because I know the language.

5.) What makes you laugh?

My animals and my kids crack me up!  I laugh at their antics daily!  I also like books/television shows/movies with satirical comedy and witty banter.

6.) Who would you have dinner with, dead or alive?

I would like to have dinner with Audrey Hepburn or Nadine Burke-Harris.  Both are humanitarians and I admire their work and all they have done for underserved communities.
